Margarites took its name from a queen of Eleftherna, Margarita, who was so impressed by the amazing beauty of the place, that she sold her expensive jewelry, and ordered this settlement to be built in her honor.
The area is the largest pottery center in Western Crete and one of the largest in Greece.
The main reason is the excellent quality and large reserve of loamy soil. Although a trademark, it is not the only feature of the area, since Margarites has also historical interest. It is an area that flourished culturally for centuries, from the beginning of the Venetian occupation onwards, something that is evident in its architecture until today.
